Christian Oblak

Austrian and German Restaurant Melbourne

Christian has already won so many hearts of the Austrian Community here in Melbourne as the one who created an extraordinary buffet of Austrian specialties for the “Austrian Ball” several years ago that each and every attendee still remembers fondly. In some ways, it was a testimony, that Christian who has worked in highly prestigious 5 and Michelin star restaurants and hotels in countries ranging from Switzerland to Ireland to Russia – just to name a few – has always remained deeply connected to his country of origin and the Austrian cuisine.

Christian’s passion for food and excellent service is deeply ingrained in him. What sounds like a cliché, is indeed true for the proud 30-year-old Austrian: his interest and curiosity for cooking started with the intriguing smell of an Apfelstrudel baking in the oven prepared by his grandma when he came home from school. He soon decided that he would become a chef and learned the ropes in a restaurant close by, adjacent to a brewery (one more reason to try our tasty beer soup ) Here he soon advanced as an apprentice keen to take on more and more responsibility.

And although Christian loved Austria, the urge to broaden his horizon, to travel, to learn English and to extend and perfect his skills as a chef made him apply for jobs abroad and led him to Ireland. Here his international career started and paired with his diligence, strong work ethic and eagerness to always improve – himself, processes and procedures as well as his guests’ culinary enjoyments – he progressed through the ranks, became Executive Chef and set up new restaurants overseas and in Australia – his new home for several years now.

Gasthaus on Queen

When the opportunity to open the Gasthaus on Queen presented itself, Christian knew it was the right thing to do. Regardless of the difficulties this new adventure brought with it in the midst of a pandemic. “The plates are my canvas,” the Austrian once said and we think that this shows that cooking is more for him than just feeding people. For him, it is the art of making people happy, creating new and recreating old enjoyable memories.

You’ll often see Christian on the floor talking to you. Please, don’t hesitate to ask him any questions about the food you eat. He is keen to answer them and surely has an interesting story up his sleeves for you. It’s what he loves and we are truly excited about what he has created. And also will in the future since we know he has more than one dream and the Gasthaus on Queen is just one of them!
