Are you an austrian or german restaurant?

Many ask us: are you an Austrian restaurant or a German restaurant here in Melbourne?

Lets start with what is actually German in our restaurant:

  • Weihenstephan Weissbier on tap, which is not seen in any other German restaurant in Melbourne, with the Dunkel on tap as well, which is exclusively send to us by our friends in the brewery in Munich.

  • Schweins Stelze or Schweine Haxe or of course crispy pork knuckle. that is a little more Bavarian than Austrian. So why do we do it?

  • Frankfurter Apfelwein or apple wine which is super popular in Germany.

Lets continue with what is actually Austrian in our restaurant:

  • Trumer Pils, Trumer Märzen and Trumer Zwickl (Gasthaus Bier) which is one kind of a brewery in Austria.

  • Certainly the best schnitzel in Melbourne, served with imported lingonberries and homemade potato salad.

  • We serve Liptauer instead of Obatzda. So that is totally the opposite from the German restaurants. Did you try it?

So are you now an Austrian or German restaurant?

After all, there are many common habits, cultures and traditions, obviously the language and of course the food and much more between Austria and Germany. So we like to call ourselves an Austrian restaurant which also caters and cooks for the German population in Melbourne. Considering us as the German speaking community on the other side of the world, one should not be so strict and simply enjoy the schnitzels, crispy pork belly, apple strudel and imported beers and wines and more.

We are curious to hear what you think what differences there are between Austrian and German restaurants in Melbourne. Let us know on your next visit in Gasthaus on Queen.
